You can identify whether you have Super 8mm or Regular 8mm (also called Standard 8mm) film by checking the following details:
1. Look at the Film Perforations (Sprockets)
- Regular 8mm: Larger, more widely spaced perforations (sprockets) along the film edge.
- Super 8mm: Smaller, more closely spaced perforations, allowing for a larger image area.
- Both are 8mm wide, but the difference is in the image size and perforation placement.
- Regular 8mm: Came in 25 or 50 ft reels and had to be flipped halfway through filming.
- Super 8mm: Came in sealed plastic cartridges (if unprocessed) or on reels (if processed).
- If it's labeled Kodak Super 8, it's Super 8mm.
- If it's marked 8mm, Double 8, or just Regular 8, it's likely Standard 8mm.
- Regular 8mm: Smaller frame size (~4.8mm x 3.5mm).
- Super 8mm: Larger frame size (~5.79mm x 4.01mm) due to the smaller sprockets.
If you have a projector, try running the film—Super 8mm won't fit properly in a Regular 8mm projector and vice versa.
